How to clean the water filter in your refrigerator?

change the ice maker in the refrigerator

Many of us enjoy the benefits of refrigerator water filters. However, keeping them clean and safe can often be frustrating and costly. Replacing filter every six months or every 200-300 gallons of water costs roughly $50 dollars, an economic burden for ordinary American families. To prolong the filter’s service life, as well as obtain healthier water, I recommend regularly cleaning the filter. The process is fairly simple. Here’s how.

Step 1

Locate the refrigerator water filter and pull it out of the slot.

Step 2

Tap the filter cartridge over a trash can to remove large contaminants that have built up in the absorption process during the past time.

Step 3

Submerge the filter cartridge in a bucket containing warm water and a gentle cleanser such as dish soap or muriatic acid solution. You can also find solvents specifically designed for cleaning filter cartridge.

Step 4

Soak the filter cartridge in the cleanser for hours or days, entirely dependent on the condition of it. The more soiled the filter cartridge is, the longer you should soak it.

Step 5

Rinse the filter cartridge until the water runs clear.

Step 6

Dry the filter cartridge, clean the filter surface, and then reinstall it.

Routinely cleaning the refrigerator water filter is good to prolong its service life, but we still recommend changing it every six months or every 200-300 gallons of water for you and your families’ health.
